Choosing the right PC speakers has always been about balancing price and size with sound quality. Most people start off with cheap 2.0 systems (that’s two speakers and no subwoofer) but then they want better sound and move to 2.1 or 4.1 kits. These can be purchased for reasonable amounts, often under $150, and will generally sound very good, but be prepared to have to run wiring and rearrange your desk. Also, while subwoofers are great for sound range they are not the best tool for maintaining a good relationship with your neighbors, especially if you live in an apartment. Thanks to a desire to cut down on clutter and no need for excess bass, I’ve found that a good set of 2.0 speakers is often more than enough for me. The latest set I have been enjoying is Logitech’s Z-5 USB, which is composed of two very basic PC speakers that set up in seconds and have no unnecessary features or settings.

Plus they look quite nice so for once my speakers match my display and don’t have to be hidden behind it. The Z-5 speakers are all about simplicity. After taking them out of their packaging all you have to do is to connect the left one to the right one, plug in the USB port, and power them up. There are no controls on the speakers, all the settings are handled through your PC or the remote. Because they are USB speakers everything is digital, which means the remote changes the volume on your PC, not the speaker volume (this means you won’t ever have the problem of the speakers being really low and your OS volume being really high but getting almost no sound). It’s a little confusing at first, but the end result is a streamlined set of controls.
You don’t get all the features of the (the biggest losses being easy to access a headphone jack and the LCD), but they are more affordable and less flashy.
